The Police Federation has come a long way since the 1984/85 miners’ dispute. As neoliberalsm ransacks our communities the police unfortunately have an ever increasing role in managing a crisis of criminality that pervades from Canary Wharf to Westminster. Their leadership’s commitment to progressive public service and not private interests is genuine. The government wants private probation services, private prisons and private policing. It was right and proper that they were tenacious in hounding out dismal Chief Whip Mitchell. If all unions could be as tenacious in getting the whole cabinet dumped it would be even more helpful.
