They don’t come much better than that politically. Danny Boyle did a great job and his opening event for the Games reflected many of the distinctive strengths of our country, the industrial heritage, the the protest movements against injustice, the vibrant literary heritage, the National Health Service and the institutional satire against the monarchy. We could even enjoy during the proceedings Blake’s revolutionary song Jerusalem, so innocently appropriated these days in the weepy nationalism of the Womens Institute and others. Doctors and nurses and children made the NHS sequence what it was, let’s ensure our generation can keep the market out of health care and overturn the new market madness that will drive the service.
