This is one of the best struggles for many years. Workers solid, strong community support, tactics sound, principle high, unity of purpose and total determination.
The strength of the Hovis workers has already meant that 26 staff who have been on zero hours contracts have now been taken on full time on the negotiated rates for the job. These twenty six have dutifully joined the strike. The BFAWU is now fight for an in principle end to all agency staff in the factory and for the universal application of their terms and conditions to permanent jobs.
BFAWU are showing the way. Strong disciplined industrial action unfazed by the threats of the corporation, police dogs and intimidating police presence, with 100 on the picket despite the law, and above all a clear principled political objective has bound these members together in a way that should be repeated everywhere where there are agency staff or zero hours contracts. Its not bread, but organised bakers that are the staff of life. And some day we will take over the bakery.
